Studies on the benefits of language learning are numerous. Two graduate students from Stanford University highlight three areas of research most relevant to school administrators, policy makers and parents in order to provide answers to frequently asked questions about the positive impact of second language learning. In this age of accountability in education, policymakers and administrators, as well as parents, are increasingly demanding to know what research studies show regarding the benefits of language learning. This paper identifies some of the major correlation studies that highlight how language learners benefit from their experiences. Three areas of research are examined: How language learning supports academic achievement, provides cognitive benefits to students, and how it affects attitudes and beliefs about language learning and about other cultures.
